It’s true what they say; you don’t always appreciate the places you see every day. So we thought we’d take some time to give you an insight into Bakewell and its delights.
Bakewell is situated on the River Wye, with its beautiful weirs and rainbow trout. If you fancy a walk down the river you can start either left or right of the five arched stone bridge which sits just outside the main high street. There are always plenty of ducks which is lovely in the Spring when the ducklings start appearing and if you are feeling romantic you can get a ‘lovelock’ engraved and attach it to the Wye Bridge. There are plenty of benches along the river, making it a great spot to grab some fish and chips (we love Riverside Fish & Chip Shop on Granby Road) as long as you don’t might being harassed by the Canada Geese!
If you visit on a Monday you’ll see Bakewell market, which is surprisingly busy and full of some great local produce. Not that all of our favourite things revolve around food but there is a cake stall that does THE BEST Eccles cakes you’ve ever tasted.
Another must-see place in Bakewell is the local church. All Saint’s Church is home to some very interesting relics, such an impressive stone cross from the 9th century and some ancient stone coffins in the churchyard.
If that’s not enough culture and history for you, you could visit the Old House Museum, located in the centre of Bakewell. It is one of the town’s oldest buildings and was first inhabited during the reign of Henry VIII as a tax collector’s cottage. It’s now a great little museum with artefacts mostly donated by locals and gives you a taste of Bakewell’s quirky local history.
One of our favourite things in Bakewell is the independent businesses. As one ourselves it’s fantastic to see our peers thriving. If we are in need of a bit of a glamour injection we nip round the corner to see the amazing ladies at Victoria Hutchinson & Co, who are not only knowledgeable and welcoming but will make sure you leave with your hair looking a million dollars.
And if that isn’t enough pampering for you Bamboo Beauty are our go to for the highest quality in treatments and can always recommend which products or services to go for.
Lambton Larder is our go to for delicious authentic Italian coffee (particularly on a Monday morning) and maybe even a cannoli if we feel like a treat. There are tables outside so you can sit and watch the world go by when the weather allows it.
Just down the road from us is John Hattersley Wines who stock the most incredible wines from all over the world and also really go the extra mile with their customer service.
We would always finish off the day with an evening meal at Arthurs who do an exquisite a la carte menu or The Manners who make the best quality pub food around and where you are always guaranteed a warm welcome and a relaxed atmosphere.
But obviously if you are heading into Bakewell the most important thing to do is visit Roseanna Croft Jewellery! Not only do we have some stunning couture pieces in the shop but also some beautiful collections. If you let us know you are coming we will be able to offer you a complimentary design consultation for everything from an engagement ring to a redesign of your grandma’s old jewellery.
We can’t wait to see you and share Bakewell with you.
Love,
Roseanna & Co x
