The saying goes that Diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but there is an emerging trend of coloured gemstone engagement rings, with the traditional stones being shunned in favour of something more unique.

As with many different phases of fashion, this one began with some of the biggest stars opting for Sapphires, Rubies and Emeralds instead (to name a few). These ladies’ fiance’s gave them charming coloured gemstone engagement rings as a token of their love and, of course, to create an eye-catching accessory.

Lady Gaga was given a Pink Diamond engagement ring surrounded by a circle of Diamonds in 2018, when proposed to by Christian Carino. Supermodel Heidi Klum’s sparkling engagement ring featured a green central gemstone surrounded by two cushion-cut Diamond and was estimated to be worth $20,000-$30,000. Our nation’s own Victoria Beckham has acquired many new rings since marrying David Beckham in 1999, one of which being a stunning cushion-cut Emerald that sits in a sculptural diamond spiral. Another of Victoria’s coloured engagement ring was a striking oval Sapphire, which sits on a skinny pave band. We recently had a client come to our boutique in the Peak District who wanted a unique engagement ring.  He had read one of our previous blogs and thought that a coloured gemstone would be the perfect choice.  His partner’s birthstone was Sapphire, so this was the obvious, and particularly stunning choice for this bride to be.

Coloured gemstones may not be for the more traditional amongst us, but are an excellent and highly unique choice for those who want to make a statement.  It also means that if you have inherited a beautiful coloured gemstone, you can re use it in something you will wear every day and be reminded of someone you love.
