Redesign of Old Cut Diamond Engagement Ring by Roseanna Croft Jewellery

The Design Brief

Redesign an antique Old Cut Diamond Engagement Ring, with matching wedding rings in Platinum.
A couple of months ago we had a lovely lady come into the shop with a crushed antique engagement ring. It was heart-breaking to see such a beautiful ring in such a sad state!

 

Our client had been gifted this ring when her partner of 18 years proposed. I do believe it was his Grandmothers, along with her antique wedding ring. All the diamonds in these rings were beautiful Old European Cuts, with so much character and history. What a beautiful gesture!

Old European Cut Diamond

‘Old European Cut Diamond’ is the term for a Diamond that was cut (by hand) many years ago before the more modern and accurate ways of stone cutting were introduced. Modern diamonds are known as Round Brilliant Cuts.

 

So, with this beautiful ring being irreparable my client and I took to the task of designing her a sleek, contemporary ring, using these Old Cut Diamonds.

 

A beautiful twist of old and new.

My client showed me a few designs she had seen online and I set to work designing her a ring which has these contemporary qualities. One of the qualities asked for was delicate/not too chunky. Now, the Diamonds she had were larger than average, shall we say! Which made the delicate requirement quite tricky, but I did what I could!

 

My client also wanted her wedding band to be channel set, which is also quite tricky with Old Cut Diamonds, but we love a challenge. (I think I pulled it off!)

 
I wasn’t finished there though! Hubby to be needed a wedding band too! In the original ring, there were some tiny, little Diamonds. Her fiancé asked for some of these to be set in his Platinum wedding band as well. Three little Diamonds to represent their 3 beautiful children. Who said men can’t be sentimental? I was very pleased to be asked to redesign this Old Cut Diamond Engagement Ring and the wedding rings for my client, and very proud of the job we’ve done here at Roseanna Croft Jewellery. From old to new, and full of memories.
