Turquoise | December Birthstone

Last December we looked at Zircon and Tanzanite, but there is another stunning December birthstone we would like to talk to you about today.

Turquoise is found in only a few places on earth.  Mainly dry and barren regions where acidic, copper-rich groundwater seeps downward and reacts with minerals that contain phosphorous and aluminium.  The result of this process is a porous, semi translucent to opaque compound of hydrated copper and aluminium phosphate.  Turquoise is a great example of an opaque coloured stone that can be marketed both as a gem for jewellery and as an ornamental material.

Although turquoise may lack the sparkle and clarity of transparent gemstones like emeralds and sapphires, its multi-layered history and soul satisfying colour makes it a desirable gem all the same.  The colours of turquoise can range from dull greens to grass greens to a bright sky blue.  Its value is in its ancient heritage and unforgettable, unique colour.

The traditional source for the ‘robin’s egg blue’ or sky blue is the Nishapur district of Iran, formerly known as Persia.  So often you will hear this coloured stone being referred to as Persian blue, whether or not it was actually mined in Iran.

While turquoise doesn’t sparkle like a Diamond, it can be polished to a beautiful sheen, and will catch the eye with its unique hue.  When selecting turquoise jewellery, necklaces, pendants and earrings are a great choice as they are likely to be less exposed to damage.  But if you prefer to wear rings or bracelets just make sure to take a little more care to avoid scratches and knocks.
