Today I’d like to speak to you about what is one of the most sentimental pieces I’ve ever made, my green Amethyst pendant.
Several years ago my dad gave me a green Amethyst (my birthstone) for my birthday. Because it was such a special gift it took me a long time to decide what I wanted to do with it. I wanted to make something beautiful and unique with it but at the same time wanted something that I could wear every day.
At first I thought a ring containing the Amethyst would be stunning, but after I’d drawn up a few different designs I decided that the size of the stone would make a ring impractical. It was at this point I decided to go for a pendant. The large green Amethyst was to be set in 18ct Yellow Gold and framed in an 18ct White Gold and Diamond frame. The chain is fairly long (20 inches) to allow the pendant to hang freely and catch the eye, and every element is handmade, which I think makes it even more special. I wanted to make it as versatile as possible so I sketched out a design that would allow the pendant to be worn three ways.
The pendant took me fifteen hours in total to complete, as it involved complicated techniques and absolute precision. But the satisfaction and joy I felt when I’d finished it and the fact that I get to wear it every day made it completely worth it.
My favourite thing about bespoke jewellery is the meaning and sentimentality behind it. I love hearing the stories of people’s pieces and what they mean to them. This pendant was the last piece I made when I was working in Australia, so it signified the end of an era of my life and the start of a new adventure back in the UK.
